Computer Monitor Adjustment

Computer monitors, both LCD and CRT, need regular adjustment to an accepted "standard". Most monitors are mis-adjusted too bright or too dark, too contrasty or not contrasty enough, or they may exhibit an overall color cast.

Look carefully at the stepwedge below. You should be able to see 12, more or less distinct, shades of grey in the numbered "steps". The least distinct transition will probably be between the darkest steps (9-12). The grey border should be slightly lighter than step 7 but darker than step 6. There should be no color cast in any area of the stepwedge, it should appear neutral grey. Step 1 should appear the same as the background (white). Finally, the gradient below the steps should be smooth with no banding.
