Hilda Krantz's Trip Photos - the People
|
| This is the third of three ([page 1], [page2]) pages of photographs taken by my mother, Hilda Krantz Beitel, and my Grandmother, Theresa Ahl Krantz, while they were on a trip to Canada to visit their relatives. They rode the train from Salem, Oregon, to Primate, Saskatchewan, and back. Here they finally got around to taking pictures of the people they were visiting. Too bad they didn't take a few more. The photos are mentioned in the diary Mom kept of the trip.

August 31, 1930 - George Ahl's farm, somewhere between Primate and Denzil, Saskatchewan, Mom(Hilda) on the far left, George Ahl on the far right with his wife Bessie next to him

The morning of August 31, 1930, Mom noted that it was "Very cold last night." At 5:15 it was 26 degrees, by 6 am it had warmed up to 32 degrees. That explains why everyone in the photo is wearing a coat.
Later that day, Mom wrote, "Arrived at Uncle George's place about 3:30. Took pictures. #11 Whole Party". Unfortunately she did not name the people in the group. She is the one standing at the far left. George and Bessie Ahl are standing on the far right. The man in the white cap could be Mr. Taphorn, and the lady to the left of him (light coat, dark dress) could be Mrs. Taphorn, since the Taphorn family was visiting there that afternoon and evening. In fact, their car would not start until the carburetor was cleaned out and they finally left at 11:45 pm.

The two young women (dark coat, light dress / light coat, light dress) would probably be the Anna and Elma in the haystack photo below. The picture must have been taken by Grandma Krantz, because she is not in the photo. The original photo is 2.75 inches by 4.5 inches.

Photo #12 is labeled "Mama & Florence & Richard."
Since Grandma (Theresa Ahl) Krantz had taken the group picture (above), someone took her picture with her niece and nephew, Florence and Richard Ahl, two of George and Bessie's children (right). The two children are so bundled up that it is not possible to tell which is which. Both of the children were also included in the big group in photo number 11 along with two other children. The original photo is 2.75 inches by 4.5 inches.

Twelve photos finished off the first roll of film, then Mom started her second roll. Unfortunately they only took this one last picture, "#1 - Elma, Anna & I on the haystack." Mom is the one in the center. She was 5 feet eight inches tall, so this haystack must have been enormous! It's not clear exactly who Elma and Anna are, but they could be the two young ladies in photo # 11 minus their coats. Since Mom did have an extra note in the back of her book that said, "Miss Elma Taphorn, Box 5, Denzil, Sask.", one of the girls must be Elma Taphorn. Anna could be her sister. There were no references as to how many people were in the Taphorn family. The original photo is 2.75 inches by 4.5 inches.
