Photos from 1930 Primate, Saskatchewan
| This is the second of three pages of photographs ([Page 1] [Page3]) taken by my mother, Hilda Krantz Beitel, and my Grandmother, Theresa Ahl Krantz, while they were on a trip to Canada to visit their relatives. They rode the train from Salem, Oregon, to Primate, Saskatchewan (2001 population = 45), and back. This page shows several scenes around Primate, the church, grain elevators, and the Ahl's (my great-grandparents) chicken coop. The photos are mentioned in the diary Mom kept of the trip.

The Church
August 21, 1930 - Primate, Saskatchewan, Catholic Church
In her diary, August 21, Mom wrote, "Ma & I took pictures." This was "#4 - Church". There's a large cross over the door on the far right of the building (just barely visible in photograph). The original photo is 2.75 inches by 4.5 inches.
A few days after taking the picture, they went to Mass in this church. Apparently the weather was quite warm that day. "Aug. 24 - Got up at 6:15. Went to Primate with Uncle Geo. to church. It was dreadfully hot in church we almost suffocated."

The Pool Grain Elevators
| August 21, 1930 - Primate, Saskatchewan, distant view of grain elevators |
These are the photos mentioned in the diary as "#5- 6 elevators".
When seen from a distance, the grain elevators appear all lined up, marching across the prairie (above). The railroad track must be running right alongside. When enlarged, the sign on the sides of the elevators reads "POOL". Pool was a short name for the farmer's cooperative that operated the elevators. The original photo is 2.75 inches by 4.5 inches.

August 21, 1930 - Primate, Saskatchewan, Grain Elevators
| The close view of the grain elevators in Primate (right), possibly taken from behind the school building. In the lower portion of the view is a strand of barbed wire fence. There are some boxcars present. The elevators must have been built along the roailroad tracks. The original photo is 2.75 inches by 4.5 inches.

Ahl's Chicken Coop
After the elevators came pictures "#7 & 8 Grandma's house - #9 the 'Old Zink'." Unfortunately, these pictures have not been found. "Old Zink", since it is capitalized, could refer to a person, perhaps it was Great-Grandpa Ahl.
"Photo # 10 Grandma's chicken yard" appears to the right. Great-Grandpa Ahl is standing to the right of the open door, Great-Grandma Ahl is further to the right. There is an unidentified person crouching or sitting just to the left of the gate. In the background on the left edge of the picture are the grain elevators again. Perhaps the Ahls lived fairly close to the school in Primate. In fact, looking at a recent map of Primate, nothing is very far from anything else!
The original photo is 2.75 inches by 4.5 inches.
