Photos from Yahk, B.C. & Primate, Sas.,
Canada ca. 1930
|
| This is the first of three pages ([page 2], [page 3]) of photographs taken by my mother, Hilda Krantz Beitel, and my Grandmother, Theresa Ahl Krantz, while they were on a trip to Canada to visit their relatives. They rode the train from Salem, Oregon, to Primate, Saskatchewan, and back. The first pictures are of the Hotel in Yahk and the school in Primate. The photos are mentioned in the diary Mom kept of the trip.

Hotel Yahk
The train had already been through customs at Kingsgate and proceeded on to Yahk. Here their train car was sidelined to wait for another train. Mom took the opportunity to get out her camera and take her first picture of the trip, of the Hotel Yahk. She doesn't mention the little girls strolling by.
Today, almost eighty years later, it's amazing to be able to find a website for Yahk that has a picture of the same hotel. It's still there, although it appears that the porch has been removed.
The original photo is 2.75 inches by 4.5 inches.

School in Primate
Under magnification the placard above the door reads "Primate SD45__", the last two numbers could be 75, but are not clear. Under that are more numbers, the middle numbers are 34, but the rest are unreadable. (SD = School District)
There are two men working on the building. One is bent over up on the roof. The second is facing the right side of the building. The tall buildings in the background are grain elevators.

These two pictures of the school were the first taken in Primate, Canada. After a late start, "Didn't wake up till 7:00", Mom's entry is short, "Ma & I took pictures. 2 & 3 - School." It's possible that this school building was not far from the Ahls house.
A different view with the same two men working, one on the roof, the other to the left of the automobile. The auto certainly dates the scene!
