Hilda's Diary of Her 1930 Train Trip to Canada
Two years after graduating from Mt Angel Academy with her teaching certificate, my mother, Hilda (then Krantz) Beitel, set out on her first travel adventure. She and her mother, Theresa Ahl Krantz, took the train from Salem, Oregon, to Primate, Saskatchewan. They visited Theresa's parents, John and Anna Ahl, and her brother George Ahl and his family. It had been many years since they had seen each other. Hilda kept a trip diary in the little notebook pictured below.
About seventy years later, I found the notebook. While organizing old family photos I realized that some of the photos were taken on the trip. Ten of the thirteen photos referenced in the diary were found. Number 7 and 8 of "Grandma's house" and number 9 "the Old Zink", whatever or whomever she meant by that, are missing. Otherwise, Mom's words and photos are together again so you can travel along back to 1930.

| Mom (Hilda) kept her notes in this 3.5 inch by 5.75 inch notebook. If you look closely, her name is written in pencil in the upper right hand corner, "H. Krantz".
In the back of the book she made some notes, probably in preparation for her application for American citizenship (link at left).
