Welcome to Calypso's Roots our family history and genealogy** website. We try to regularly update our family history files and are transcribing diaries and letters as we locate them. We are also developing articles about building and publishing a digital family history archive.

We'd like to thank everyone who has already contributed to our family tree database and invite others to send us related material.

Calypso bulbosa
Calypso bulbosa

Our site name was inspired by the scientific term for a small, temperate orchid, Calypso bulbosa (lady slipper or fairy slipper). This is Elizabeth's favorite plant and can be found occasionally in undisturbed forests of western and northeastern US.

If you are lucky enough to find Calypso in the wild, please don't disturb it. This delicate plant has only one leaf, one flower and a few fragile roots.

The conditions under which this plant grows are not well known, and it won't transplant. Calypso may exist in a symbiotic relationship with roots of trees around it. If you disturb it, it will die. A flower is produced in the spring alongside a single leaf.

During summer Calypso retreats underground as a bulb.
